We have a very small program with ~30 athletes per session and we generally fill up to that point. Our staff includes certified experienced coaches who are also educators, triathletes who share their passion for healthy multi-sport living.
Because we have small groups we can do a great deal. The first thing we do is establish a positve group dynamic that values and respects each athlete. Athletes are broken up for swimming and biking according to age, ability and interest. We have some young athletes who can swim and run at higher and older athletes with less ability and we get them all into a group that fits them best. We have had athletes who have learned how to swim and bike at camp and we have also have very experienced athletes too.
Generally, the kids arrive at 9:00 and we have a general meeting with all of them before we break into groups. The first day incorporates an orientation day with some basic skills and a swim check. On Mondays, Tuesdays and Thursdays all athletes get swimming instruction, cycling, and running activities and games. They always have an option of taking breaks and there are lots of breaks built in.
On Wednesdays we head to the Colonie Town Park for a long bike ride on the bike path. There are several options so they all have choices that are age and ability appropriate. The younger or less interested athletes usually do a short ride that goes 6-12 miles and have time for a swim lesson in the 50 meter pool at the park. There are always one or two other more advanced ride options that go longer on the bike. Last year one group did a century!
On Fridays we head up to Grafton State Park where we do a kids triathlon walk-through. We have a variety of hikes, runs, open water swim lessons and mountain bike rides. The kids also get running games on the beach and time to play in the sand.
When bad weather arrives with do clinics on bike mechanics, transitions, race preparation, and indoor games and training. We always plan on getting outside even if it rains so our athletes may have some fun getting a bit muddy and wet too.
We also offer optional out-of-camp activities for kids and families to participate in. Last year we went white water rafting, to Adirondack Extreme for ropes/ ziplines and on several hikes. PArents who are interested in volunteering should contact us and we are glad to have them along too.
Please feel free to contact us if you have any questions.
Don't forget to have your bike tuned!
